Jakarta. The Ministry of Transportation has asked airline operators to step up their services and avoid delays during the peak season, especially as the year-end holidays draw to a close next week.

"Airlines are supposed to reduce delays, or at least conform to the standard operating procedure [when delays occur]," Transportation Ministry secretary general Sugihardjo said at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, on Sunday (24/12), as reported by state-run news agency Antara.

Sugihardjo said airlines should inform passengers of the causes of flight delays and compensate them whenever it occurs.

Furthermore, the number of delays also contribute to the ministry's assessment of airline companies, he said.

Passenger numbers are expected to peak towards Jan. 8, as holiday travelers return home.
