Yogyakarta Airport Remains Closed, Flights Diverted After Garuda Indonesia Plane Skids Off Runway
Jakarta. Yogyakarta's Adisutjipto Airport remains closed on Thursday morning (02/02) after a Garuda Indonesia Boeing 737-800 aircraft skidded off runway last night. All flights of the state flag carrier have been diverted to Solo in Central Java.
The GA 258 flight carrying 123 passengers from Jakarta to Yogyakarta skidded off the runway during landing at 07.30 p.m. on Wednesday, possibly due to bad weather conditions.
No one was injured in the accident.
Garuda Indonesia vice president Benny Butarbutar said 34 flights from and to Yogyakarta have been diverted to Adisumarmo Airport in Solo, including 10 Jakarta-Yogyakarta flights, three Denpasar-Yogyakarta flights, two Makassar-Yogyakarta flights, one Balikpapan-Yogyakarta flight and one Surabaya-Yogyakarta flight.
"Garuda Indonesia is now putting all efforts to evacuate [from the airport] the Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft that weighs around 40 tons," Benny said in a statement.
According to a notice to airmen issued this morning, the airport will be closed until 3 p.m.
