Jakarta. The Mega Mall Batam Center in Batam, Riau, will host the 2017 National Spa Festival on July 16.
In 2009 and again 2012, Indonesia was voted the best spa destination in the world by the International Wellness Awards organization. Europe's Senses magazine also awarded Bali the best spa destination in 2009.
In 2015, Indonesia's wellness sector won 11 accolades at the World Luxury Spa Awards at Harbour Grand in Hong Kong.
"Why Indonesia? Because Indonesia is seen to be capable of maintaining the traditional cultural heritage combined with the latest research [on wellness]," the Tourism Ministry’s deputy for tourism development, Esthy Reko Astuty, said on Thursday (13/07).
"The festival is an activity with a mission to develop, preserve and introduce Indonesia’s spa that uses characteristic herbs from the country, also known as 'Ethno Wellness Spa Indonesia,' to the greater community and tourists," she added.
The event will host an exhibition and a best spa competition, as well as a spa manager and therapist competition.
"There are lots of spa owners coming from across the globe, as this is also the first event held in Indonesia. The spa industry has been improving, as people are becoming more aware of their health," Esthy said.
At least 100 exhibitors and 1,000 participants will participate, as well as domestic and foreign speakers to discuss current issues surrounding spa and wellness sector.
"Spa is part of our culture, so we are introducing our culture and tourism. For the foreign tourist market, they will love this," the ministry’s head of cultural tourism promotion Wawan Gunawan said.
