Sudamala Suites Offers an Artsy, Tranquil Getaway in the Heart of Sanur
Jakarta. Known as one of the best places to watch the sun rises in the island of Bali, the seaside town of Sanur is packed not only with restaurants, galleries and cozy accommodations, but also historical spots that most are not familiar with.
The Sudamala Suites and Villas is on the sweet spot in Sanur to invite guests to experience the rich cultural and historical scenes of the town while still allowing them to stay in a laid-back, tranquil space. Located in Jalan Sudamala, just five-minute walking from the Sudamala beach, it offers 34 luxurious suites in between a lush green lawn and a large swimming pool.
As seen by the sculptural decoration in each door, suites and villas in the Sudamala are named after Balinese dances. The old key to the suite is a sign that the Sudamala takes their old-world charm concept seriously. However, there is also the right dose of contemporary convenience in a proper tub, a luxurious hot shower, sustainable air conditioning and a 43-inch plasma television.
A deluxe garden suite in the ground floor, which starts at $136, occupies a spacious 59 square meters room with king-sized bed, a large study table and seating area, private patio or gazebo with an access to the hotel's Natah Saji central courtyard, private rain shower in the open-air and hand-crafted custom furniture in each suite. A studio suite on the first floor offers a bigger space to fit a comfortable in-room seating area, private bathtub and a private balcony with a view to the swimming pool. And the studio suite pool access will allow a direct path to the pool, the lounge and the Sudajiva spa.
If you travel with family, the two bedroom Legong Villa will let you and the group relax in your own private terrace, living room and dining room with prices starting at $234. The villa occupies 217 square meters, which include two suits with one king-sized bed and one twin bed.
Guests who are particular about the way they sleep will love the pillow choices at the Sudamala. Often overlooked by many hotels, this service gives an assortment of five different pillows per request. Choices vary from Bolster, which is made of hollow fibers and perfect for people with allergies, Firm Pillow that is designed to cradle and support your head and neck, Original Pillow that is lower in the middle for a better head alignment with your spine, soft Sonata Pillow that comes in a rounded design and thus suitable for those who sleep in a foetal position, and lastly the Thermo-Cool Pillow, which combines 3D deformation of a soft-solid material with special ability to absorb body temperature.
The Ares Steak and Pasta of the Sudamala provides a hearty selection of Western, Indonesian and vegetarian breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m., but its main strength relies on steak in signature sauces. For once in your trip to Bali, you can opt out of traditional fried rice and get away with your favorite medium rare steak. If you're in the mood for pasta, Ares is famous for their Pasta Emilie, a Bolognese fusion that features a spicy sauce and makes a good, fulfilling meal for lunch.
The hotel offers an attractive selection of tours for guests which will bring you to both popular and hidden landmarks in Sanur, Denpasar and Ubud. The basic Sanur Life tour is best for early risers with the Sindhu morning market as a starting point. There is no better way to see how locals live than to go to its nearest market and Sindhu is a place for residents of Sanur to get their daily needs, from various meat and greens to colorful condiments for religious offerings.
Apart from the market, the tour also takes you to various holy sites in Sanur. The Blanjong temple, located just 10 minutes drive away from the hotel, is a stone column at the bottom of a sacred pit that dated to 913 AD, or 11 centuries ago. The column, also considered sacred, carries ancient Sanskrit and Old Balinese writings by King Sri Kesari Warmadewa, which marks the first known written record of a Balinese king. The Segara temple, whose name refers to the Balinese word for "seaside," is an ancient holy site that was constructed from corals. To add a new perspective in art, the tour also includes a visit to the Le Mayer museum, which was once the residence of Belgian painter Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres.
Sanur has seen the works of great artists who once resided in the area, such as Le Mayeur, Miguel Covarrubias and Walter Spies. The Sudamala makes it one of their visions to celebrate art as an element that makes a stay in Sanur more than just memorable, but also meaningful. The 250 square-meter Sudakara ArtSpace, which is located at the front side of the hotel, is a melting pot for artists, collectors and enthusiasts to meet and appreciate art. Be sure to spot gamelan rindik players who usually play in front of the ArtSpace during the day, and appreciate their musical skill up close. Made of bamboo and tuned in pairs, the distinctive sound of the traditional Balinese instrument does add a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere.
The Sudamala Suites and Villas in Bali just recently had a night of celebration to mark their five-year anniversary. In addition to their sites in Bali and Lombok, the Sudamala is currently expanding to Komodo island, which will be open for public in 2017.
