Heri Dono to Perform Wayang Legenda at Singapore National Gallery Opening
Jakarta. Prominent Indonesian artist Heri Dono, whose work was recently shown at the 56th Venice Biennale, will perform at the opening of Singapore's National Gallery on Nov. 23.
Singapore has been working on the National Gallery for a decade now, and selected guests will soon venture to the vernissage of the Gallery that is being billed as the "pride of Southeast Asia."
Heri revealed recently that he would perform Wayang Legenda on the opening night. He created the performance in 1968 to counter the "Javanization" efforts of that time. Instead of performing Java-centric stories, Wayang Legenda is based on a creation myth from Batak ethnic group of western Sumatra.
Since then, the show, with its distortion of the refined wayang figures, has been used a way to tackle various issues of concern to the wider public.
Singapore's National Gallery will open to the public on Nov. 24.
