Rio 2016: Indonesian Long Jumper Comes Up Short in Qualifying Round
Jakarta. Indonesia's Asian champion Maria Natalia Londa failed to pass the qualifying round in the women's long jump in the Rio 2016 Olympics on Tuesday (16/08).
Maria, a gold medal winner in the Asian and Asean championships in the past two years, recorded a longest jump of 6.29 meters after three attempts, placing her 25th out of 38 long jumpers in the qualifying round. Serbia's Ivana Spanovic recorded the longest jump of 6.87 meters in the qualifying round and eventually won bronze in the final on Thursday.
Maria was disappointed but tried to keep a brave face about the result.
"My personal best is 6.70 meters, I didn't know what happened there. I've been waiting for this moment and I thought I was quite relaxed out there," Maria said in a statement received by the Jakarta Globe.
"I felt good and didn't feel any niggle from my previous injuries," she said.
Maria was suffering from a fever when she arrived in Brazil and had to cut down on training while in Rio.
"It could be because I had to adjust my training schedule to get more rest [due to the fever]," Maria said.
Indonesia now has only one medal hope left in Rio 2016, BMX rider Tony Syarifudin.
