Airy Rooms to Close at End of May
Jakarta. Airy Nest Indonesia, a Jakarta-based hotel and room booking company operating under the Airy Rooms trade name, has decided to stop all of its operations – including partnerships with property partners in Indonesia – at the end of this month as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to decimate the travel market in Indonesia.
The company became the latest hospitality business to throw in the towel after hotel bookings were reduced to virtually nonexistent during the pandemic.
Airy said the company would continue to operate until May 31. After that date, all transactions, including hotel bookings and flight ticket reservations, can no longer be done on the Airy website, mobile app or online travel agent.
Airy said it would complete all refund requests before it ceases operations completely.
"We decided [to close the company] since Covid-19 has practically decimated the travel market," Airy Chief Executive Louis Kodoatie said in a statement on Friday.
"We are very sorry that we have to make this decision," Alfonso said.
Airy and competitors RedDoorz and OYO target budget-conscious customers by offering cheap rooms – effectively undercutting hotel prices – at private establishments or small hotels.
But as Covid-19 spreads to every province in the country – killing more than 1,000 people – the travel industry has come to a standstill.
The government had imposed a ban on travels from Covid-19 red zones like Jakarta to other regions last month.
The restriction was relaxed this week to allow business travelers and people experiencing family emergencies to travel.
The occupancy rate at starred hotels dropped to its lowest level in more than five years with only one in three hotel rooms occupied in March, the latest data from the Central Statistics Agency showed.
In comparison, only half of hotel rooms were unoccupied in March last year.
