BritCham, Kadin Join Hands in Strengthening UK-Indonesia Business Ties
Jakarta. Indonesia and the United Kingdom inked on Thursday a memorandum of understanding that would pave the way for a boost in British investment in the archipelago.
The British Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia (BritCham Indonesia) signed the MoU with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) in Surabaya.
The agreement was a follow-up from British Prime Minister David Cameron's visit to Indonesia in July, during which he said UK companies have expressed great interest in expanding their businesses in Southeast Asia's biggest economy.
"We aim to match up Indonesian businesses with UK businesses, to increase awareness of opportunities in East Java and [particularly in] Surabaya," Chris Wren, BritCham Indonesia executive director, said in a statement.
The joint agreement between BritCham Indonesia and Kadin Surabaya will allow both members to "promote, encourage and assist the continuation and growth of trade and investment relations between Indonesia and Britain."
Direct investment from the UK stood at $424.93 million in this year's January-June period, 34.24 percent lower than the $646.18 recorded in the same months of 2014, data from Indonesia's Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) show.
