Despite Tension, Trade Between Indonesia and Brazil is Stable: Ministry
Jakarta. Bilateral trade between Indonesia and Brazil remains stable, despite rising diplomatic tension between the two developing countries in past week, said the Trade Ministry on Wednesday.
The ministry is yet to receive report or complaint from the Indonesian Trade Promotion Center (ITPC) in Samba, Brazil, said Nus Nuzulia Ishak, the director general of national export development at the ministry.
"I think there is no change [with Brazil], no problem with [our] economic [relations)," said Nus Nuzulia Ishak on Wednesday.
The total trade between both countries rose to $4.05 billion last year, up 4.8 percent from the previous year, with a deficit of $1.05 billion on Indonesia's side. Brazil sells cotton, corn, soybean oil and its derivatives to Indonesia.
Last Friday Brazil postponed accepting the credentials of incoming Indonesian ambassador to Brazil, Toto Riyanto, as an act of protest against Indonesia's decision to press ahead with the execution of Brazilian Marco Acherin, who is on death row for drug trafficking in Indonesia.
In response, Indonesia recalled Toto to Jakarta.
