Go-Jek to Launch Go-Car Service
Jakarta. Indonesia's popular motorcycle taxi service Go-Jek is preparing a new line of service called Go-Car, an online-based taxi service in cooperation with existing conventional taxi operators, an official revealed on Wednesday (30/03).
The company has yet to announce the plan, but according to the head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency, Andri Yansyah, Go-Car would use a similar system as currently used by another ride-hailing application, GrabTaxi.
"[Go-Jek] asked me about the official procedures to form Go-Car. They said they want to work together with taxi companies. I said go ahead," Andri said a day after meeting Go-Jek founder and CEO Nadiem Makarim.
"They only need to talk it over with the taxi companies or the Organization of Land Transportation Owners (Organda). They should negotiate on the fares. We will study the results and sign the deal when it's all clear and done," he said.
According to Andri, Go-Jek does not need to form another legal entity or apply for a new permit because the 34 taxi operators in Jakarta have already done so.
The idea for Go-Car came after a massive protest from over 10,000 taxi drivers in Jakarta earlier this month. The protesters were upset about the fact that the success of car-hailing apps like Uber and Grab has led to declining incomes for conventional taxi drivers.
