Govt Grants Import Permits for 123,800 Cattle, More to Come
Jakarta. The government has agreed to let 32 feedlot operators import 123,800 cattle until the end of 2016, Dody Edward, director general of foreign trade at the Ministry of Trade, said on Friday (28/10).
This was the first import permits granted since the government discarded its old import quota system and replaced it with a requirement for importers to bring in one breeding cattle for every five feeder cattle they import.
The permits were issued to meet the remaining import quota of 150,000 cattle this year, Dody said, as quoted by Antaranews.com.
Dody added the government may grant more permits to 10-13 other feedlot operators soon.
Indonesia's cattle population has dropped since 2012, as the government's disastrous policy to curb cattle and beef import caused beef prices to skyrocket, which tempted local breeders to slaughter many of their heifers.
The government hopes this latest import policy will help farmers breed more local cattle.
