Gov't Implements Cashless Payment Systems on Toll Roads Across Archipelago
Jakarta. Gates on 35 toll road across Indonesia will begin implementing electronic payment systems on Tuesday (31/10) as part of the government's national cashless initiative program and in an attempt to ease traffic on roads across the archipelago.
Jasa Marga, the state-owned toll road operator, posted on its official Twitter page along with tips for motorists. The operator wants drivers to tap — not swap — their electronic money card on machines placed at the gate to prevent theft.

Drivers can choose their method of electronic payment system from state-controlled Bank Mandiri, Bank Rakyat Indonesia, Bank Negara Indonesia, Bank Tabungan Negara or Bank Central Asia.
Bank Nobu, Bank Mega and Bank DKI are expected to provide electronic systems starting in December.
Pungky Purnomo Wibowo, Bank Indonesia director for electronics and financial inclusion, said cashless points of sales will be available at rest areas, mini-markets, shopping centers and other brick-and-mortar retail shops across the country, as quoted by Antaranews.com
Pungky advised motorists to top up their cards before entering toll roads to prevent congestion. Prices to use toll roads vary across the country and can be checked here.
Payment digitization is only the first step before the government implements the so-called multi-lane free flow automated payment system next year, which will eliminate any barriers on the premium lanes.
"The process towards the multi-lane free flow must begun by making sure that toll road users are familiar with non-cash payments," Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution said in a statement.
