Jakarta. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources announced on Tuesday plans to retire 13 coal-fired power plants due to their high carbon emissions.

The list includes major facilities such as the Suralaya plant in Cilegon, Banten, the Paiton plant in Probolinggo, East Java, and the Ombilin plant in Sijantang Koto, West Sumatra.

The decision to decommission these power plants stems from separate studies conducted by the ministry, the Bandung Institute of Technology, and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), according to Eniya Listiani Dewi, Director General for Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation.

"We consolidated findings from all three studies and identified 13 coal-fired power plants for retirement," Eniya said in Jakarta. "Among them are Suralaya, Paiton, and Ombilin."

She added that these plants are among the largest contributors to carbon emissions, although specific details were not provided.

Earlier, Chief Investment Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan announced plans to shut down the 40-year-old Suralaya power plant as part of efforts to reduce air pollution in surrounding areas, including Jakarta.
