Jakarta. The implementation of a four-day workweek has the potential to weaken the composite stock price index performance at the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), as this system is not widely implemented across countries.

"For instance, if we are on holiday while other exchanges are open, and if there is a global downturn during our break, then when we open, the possibility of an immediate decline exists," said Irvan Susandy, the Director of Trading and Member Regulation at the IDX, in Jakarta on Monday.

If this system were to be applied in Indonesia, he believes there would be adjustments regarding the flow of information and trading between IDX and other countries that still operate on a five-day workweek.

"There will be a time gap in adjusting information and trading developments in major countries with our country," added Irvan.

However, he emphasized the need for a thorough study of the potential impact on trading in the Indonesian capital market if the four-day workweek system were to be implemented.

"If the impact on trading needs to be assessed first, so we can determine how significant the influence is," said Irvan.

The Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) had previously recommended to the government the trial implementation of a four-day workweek system, inspired by the practice in Germany.

YLKI Chairman Tulus Abadi referred to the adoption of this system as an effort to make the workforce in Indonesia more productive and happy.

Germany has initiated a trial period for a four-day workweek for 45 companies, where workers' wages remain unchanged despite the reduced working days.

The four-day workweek has also been implemented by several companies in countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Australia, and in Asia, including Japan.
