IMF Names New Director of Strategy, Policy and Review Department
Jakarta. Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, named her chief of staff, Martin Muehleisen, as director of IMF's strategy, policy and review department on Wednesday (26/07), replacing Siddharth Tiwari who announced his retirement in June.
"Martin brings an outstanding combination of skills and experience," Lagarde said of Muehleisen's 24-year career at the IMF, which included key policy assignments during the Asian financial crisis. Muehleisen has also worked with major advanced and emerging economies, including Indonesia.
"He has a deep understanding of the [IMF] and the needs of the membership," Lagarde said, noting his "analytical rigor" on crisis programs and surveillance.
Muehleisen, a German national who joined the IMF in 1993, will assume the new post after a replacement has been appointed. He holds a masters degree in economics from Cambridge University and a doctorate in economics from the University of Munich.
Muehleisen is replacing Tiwari, a 32-year veteran of IMF, who will retire at the end of September.
Since assuming the role as a director of the strategy, policy and review department in 2011, Tiwari has addressed important issues including the development of a new surveillance framework, reforming IMF's lending facilities, reviewing Special Drawing Rights, or SDRs, and the introduction of the Renminbi into its SDR basket.
Previously, Tiwari served as IMF's secretary in which he led IMF's interactions with the executive board and its 189 member states as well as initiated "the modernization" of the IMF's annual and spring meetings.
Indonesia is set to hold the IMF-World Bank Annual Meeting in Bali in 2018. The event, which will run from Oct. 8 to Oct. 14, will host 17,000 delegates who will attend nearly 3,000 meetings.
