Jakarta. Jakarta has started limited operations of its light rail transit system, carrying only invited guests, the Ministry of Transportation said in a statement on Thursday (23/08).

The ministry said the operations, involving only one train set to go through a 4.7-kilometer elevated track via five stations, started on Tuesday and will continue until Sept. 20. The was delayed several times.

The ministry did not specify whether the invited guests will be those related to the Asian Games currently hosted by the capital city. South Sumatra's Palembang, which co-hosts the multisport event, is already serving the games' athletes with its newly opened LRT system.

The ministry said the guests will be able to travel from the Velodrome Station in Pulo Gadung, East Jakarta, to the Kelapa Gading Station in North Jakarta, passing three other stations: the Pacuan Kuda Station, Pulomas Station and Kelapa Gading Mall Station.

The ministry said it has approved all technical facilities to be used for the trial and has issued an operational worthiness certificate for the limited operations.

Zulfikri, director general of railways at the ministry, said in the statement that the guests will travel free of charge.

The 4.7-kilometer route is part of the 21 kilometer-long first phase of the LRT project connecting Cibubur, in East Jakarta, to Cawang, also in East Jakarta, through Dukuh Atas in South Jakarta.

"During the trial, Jakarta Propertindo is fully responsible for potential operational disruptions and passengers' safety," Zulfikri said.

Jakarta Propertindo is a Jakarta administration-owned company, which develops the LRT project.
