Lebaran Exodus Traffic to Peak Next Weekend
Jakarta. The police said the annual Lebaran exodus — known locally as mudik — will begin in earnest on Thursday week (30/06) and reach its peak during the July 2-3 weekend.
“Saturday and Sunday, that’s when traffic is going to be at its worst. Last year it took eight hours to get to the Cipali toll exit from Jakarta, this year we hope eight hours will get you to the East Brebes toll exit,” the police's traffic unit head Agung Budi Maryoto said on Friday (24/06).
Operation Ramadania, the police’s new security operation during the Idul Fitri holiday, will involve 99,700 police officers, with additional help from the army, municipal police, the transportation ministry and other civic organizations.
With a total of 155,000 personnel, the operation will run from July 1 to July 15 on popular Lebaran exodus routes in Java.
“We will have check points along the Kalimalang road for motorbike riders, from Bekasi to Cawang and Kampung Melayu,” Agung said. “At Km 43, all motorcycles carrying more than two passengers will have to stop. The extra passenger will have to get off and we'll put them in buses," he added.
Meanwhile, trucks and other cargo carriers with more than two trailers will be prohibited from the road from July 1 to July 1o. Those caught on the road will be ticketed and removed from the road until July 10.
