Jakarta. One person died after a ferry carrying festival attendees sank in the Mahakam River in East Kalimantan on Sunday, rescuers said.
The KM Sely was carrying 47 people and two trucks when it capsized during a routine crossing in Kutai Kartanegara district at around 5:30 a.m., Antara reported.
The party on board the boat was a group of traditional kuda lumping dancers who were headed to perform at an event across the river, according to local rescuers.
One person, a man identified as Sardi, 45, drowned in the incident, which authorities suspect was caused by overloading of the ferry.
