Prabowo’s Vision: 3 Million Houses Annually to Alleviate Housing Shortage

Jakarta. Hashim S. Djojohadikusumo, Chairman of the Housing Task Force for President-elect Prabowo Subianto, announced that the administration plans to build 3 million houses annually. This target includes 2 million houses in rural and coastal areas and 1 million units in urban regions.
"These 3 million houses per year mean that over one term (five years), 15 million homes will be built across Indonesia. If God wills it and Prabowo serves two terms, 30 million houses will be constructed in ten years. Future presidents will continue the program," Hashim said during the Propertinomic Executive Dialogue on Thursday.
He explained that the 2 million rural homes would be built by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), cooperatives, village-owned enterprises (BUMdes), and local contractors, engaging local communities. This initiative is expected to create jobs and increase national per capita income.
For the 1 million urban apartments, private developers, including members of the Real Estate Indonesia (REI), will be invited to participate. “REI members are welcome to contribute. Government-owned assets, such as land in markets owned by PD Pasar Jaya in Jakarta, can be used for apartment development,” Hashim added.
Joko Suranto, Chairman of REI, voiced support for the program, calling the construction of 3 million houses annually a significant leap for the national housing industry. He said that Indonesia faces a housing shortage of 12.7 million units, a backlog that has persisted for over a decade.
“The program aligns with efforts to alleviate poverty, particularly through mass housing for rural and urban populations. REI is committed to supporting this noble initiative,” said Joko, who is also a member of the Housing Task Force.
He added that the property sector contributes 14 percent to Indonesia’s GDP, 9 percent to the state budget (APBN), and 35-55 percent to local revenue (PAD), while employing 14-17 million workers. The sector has also reduced poverty by 8 percent and addressed stunting, in line with President-elect Prabowo Subianto’s vision.
Joko emphasized the property sector’s connection to 185 other industries, noting its key role in driving the economy. As a labor-intensive industry, it creates substantial employment opportunities. Given its strategic importance, the property sector is poised to be the backbone of national economic growth.
"The sector will help Indonesia achieve 8 percent annual economic growth, contributing to the nation’s vision of Indonesia Emas (Golden Indonesia) by 2045. Housing and the broader property sector will serve as a catalyst for national economic growth, in line with the 'propertinomic' paradigm," Joko concluded.
