Regional Investment Forum in Padang to Showcase Opportunities in Tourism Sector

Jakarta. The Investment Coordinating Board, or BPKM, is set to highlight Indonesian tourism at the 2017 Regional Investment Forum, or RIF, in Padang, West Sumatra, on Oct. 15-17.
Themed "Showcasing Investment Opportunities in the Indonesian Tourism Industry," the forum will feature Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor Mirza Adityaswara, West Sumatra Governor Irwan Prayitno and Indonesian Ambassador to Australia Kristiarto Legowo.
Some tourist destinations to be showcased at the forum include Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Tanjung Kelayang in Bangka Belitung, Tanjung Lesung in Banten, the Thousand Islands in Jakarta, Borobudur Temple in Central Java, Mount Bromo in East Java and Mandeh beach and Gunung Padang in West Sumatra.
"The RIF Padang 2017 is an initiative from BPKM to support the government's efforts in developing [Indonesia's] tourism sector. The offered tourism destinations have great potential [thus] we have invited approximately 300 local and foreign investors who have the ability to develop tourism infrastructures," Thomas Lembong, head of BPKM, said in a statement on Thursday (05/10).
The government is targeting 20 million foreign tourist and 275 million domestic tourist visits by 2019.
According to data from BPKM, in the first half of this year, total investments in the tourism sector reached $929.14 million, up 37 percent from the same period in 2016.
"The countries with largest foreign direct direct investment [FDI] in Indonesia's tourism sector are Singapore with 43 percent, China with 29 percent and Malaysia with 5 percent," Thomas said.
