Senior Police Officer Addresses UPH Freshmen on Diversity, Democracy
Jakarta. Insp. Gen Gatot Eddy Pramono of the National Police spoke about diversity and democracy in the global era as part of a seminar on student orientation at Pelita Harapan University, or UPH, in Karawaci, Banten, on Friday (18/08).
"UPH should maintain a diverse campus to defend Indonesia's unity. The spirit of unity and diversity is what keeps our democracy intact. Indonesia, as a great nation, is not free from various issues, so the country needs everyone's active role, including the young generation, to keep Indonesia united. UPH as a campus that upholds [the official state ideology of] Pancasila must be ready to restore it as our nation's foundation," Gatot said.
He added that the global era allows people to enjoy easy access to any kind of information, so they need the ability to choose the correct information to avoid polarizing politics and the threat of radicalism.
Gatot expressed hope that UPH would encourage new students to gain an insight on democracy in the global era to build their integrity and professionalism.
The university welcomed 4,507 freshmen at this year's orientation. This brings the total student number 19,856.
Pelita Harapan University and the Jakarta Globe are both affiliated with the Lippo Group.
