Jakarta. H.A.S. Hanandjoeddin International Airport in Tanjung Pandan, Bangka-Belitung, started international services with the arrival of a chartered flight operated by local airline Sriwijaya Air from Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (10/09).
The airport has not hosted any flights from abroad since securing international status in December.
The flight was chartered by the Malaysia Global Trade Council (MGCC) to bring about 200 investors in the Malindo Business and Cultural Center to meet with members of the East Belitung district government to discuss investment potential in the area.
"This is a positive development. It is evident that the aviation sector can be one of the driving forces to attract investment to an area," Agus Santoso, director general of air transportation at the Ministry of Transportation, said in a statement.
He said the airport is expected to welcome regular international flights soon.
Indonesia has been upgrading its existing airports and opening additional international airports to receive more foreign flights as part of the country's efforts to attract up to 20 million foreign tourists annually by 2019.
