Indonesia to Target Non-Traditional Market in Trade Expo

Jakarta. The Trade Ministry is banking on an expo scheduled for October to generate more demands from non-traditional buyers as an effort to boost the country’s trade.

The ministry is expecting some 10,000 visitors to participate in the 29th Trade Expo Indonesian 2014, including those from non-traditional markets, such as Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America.

“The Trade Expo is a real effort to bolster the country’s export target growth of 4.16 percent this year,” said Deputy Trade Minister Bayu Krisnamurthi.

The country’s non-oil and gas exports fell 3.6 percent during the first five months of this year to $60.5 billion, from $62.8 billion in the same period last year. Exports to Indonesia’s main trading partners — China, Japan, the United States, India, South Korea, Taiwan, Europe and Southeast Asian countries — shrunk 6.9 percent to $42 billion. However, outgoing transactions with so-called non-traditional markets rose to $18.5 billion, up 4.7 percent from $17.7 billion last year.

The Trade Expo — an annual convention for local and international traders — will be held from Oct. 8 to 12. The event was attended by some 8,700 visitors last year and raised $1.82 billion in terms of investments, products and services sold.

Nus Nuzulia Ishak, director general of National Export Development, said the sales of goods account for more than a third of 2013’s expo transaction, and she hopes to see a 10 percent growth.

“But the value doesn’t end there, because this is business-to-business. There will be follow-ups,” added Nus.

This year’s event will follow the theme of  “Towards Green Business,” as the government seeks to re-brand Indonesia’s image in the international market and adopt a more environmentally conscious business model.
