Waskita Karya Planning Bali Road
Jakarta. State-controlled construction company Waskita Karya is finalizing plans for a 125-kilometer turnpike in Bali as part of its venture into the toll-road business.
M. Choliq, the president director of Waskita Karya, said the toll road — which is estimated to require between Rp 36 trillion and Rp 40 trillion ($2.8 billion and $3.1 billion) in total investment — would be constructed in the southern region of Bali, connecting Kuta to Lovina.
“[The project] is one of our efforts to extend our reach in the toll-road business. We want to operate more than 400 kilometers of toll roads within the next two to three years,” Choliq said at a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday.
He said the company was currently negotiating with the municipal, district and provincial authorities on the venture.
However, Choliq did not disclose a time frame for the project. “The construction will happen in four stages,” he said. “The first stage will connect Kuta, Canggu, Tanah Lot and Soka. That’s about 25.7 kilometers.”
The planned highway project in Bali is just one of the projects that Waskita Karya has committed to with the help of the government’s Rp 3.5 trillion capital injection, according to its president director.
Aside from the planned toll road in Bali, Waskita Karya and state toll road operator Jasa Marga are currently in talks to take over a 90.1-kilometer toll road project in Central Java — extending from Solo to Kertosono — from Thiess Contractors Indonesia. Choliq said he expected the talks to conclude within the next three months.
Waskita Karya is among the state-owned enterprises that are in line to receive additional capital from the government this year as part of President Joko Widodo’s bid to boost SOE participation in speeding up infrastructure development.
