Semarang Celebrates 470th Anniversary With Release of 4,700 Sky Lanterns
Jakarta. Semarang, the capital of Central Java, celebrated its 470th anniversary with the release of 4,700 colorful sky lanterns on Thursday night (18/05).
Thousands of people attended the three-day event, which ended on Saturday.
The event, held along Jalan Bojong Salaman, Jalan Basudewo and the Western Flood Canal, showcased traditional foods, produced by the city's small and medium enterprises.
Semarang Mayor Hendrar "Hendy" Prihadi, accompanied by his deputy Hevearita G. Rayayu, the speaker of the city's regional council, and representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, witnessed the release of the sky lanterns at 10.00 p.m.
"We appreciate all of those who contributed to this event," Hendy said. He added that the event was held with assistance from the government and the private sector.
Thursday's events culminated in a boat beauty contest involving representatives of public and private companies.
