Siloam Lippo Village Opens Siloam Cleft Center
FEBRUARY 08, 2018
Jakarta. On Wednesday (07/02), Siloam Hospitals Lippo Village unveiled the Siloam Cleft Center, a special clinic dedicated to treating patients with cleft lips or cleft palates.
Many children in Indonesia suffer from the aforementioned birth defects, also known as orofacial cleft. A cleft lip contains an opening in the upper lip that may extend all the way to the nose. A cleft palate is the condition in which the roof of the mouth contains an opening to the nose.
Left untreated, these conditions might create complications during a child’s development. Early on, an infant with a cleft lip will have difficulties nursing, which can lead to malnutrition and developmental problems. At one years-old, an infant typically enters an early stage of speaking, but complications caused by a cleft lip or palate might create speech impediments that are hard to recover from in the future.
A team at the Siloam Cleft Center, headed by Andi Budiharja, an oral and maxillofacial surgery specialist, said that he and his team have prepared special facilities to treat patients with cleft lips and cleft palates.
"At the Siloam Cleft Center, we’ve prepared special facilities and treatments for infants and children that suffer from cleft lip and cleft palate. Treating patients from birth until adulthood at 18 years-old. If we detect the defect during pregnancy, our team will inform the family, and talk to them about treatments," Andi said on Wednesday.
The team consists of various medical and medical disciplines, oral and maxillofacial orthopedic specialists, pediatricians, ENT specialists, dentists, orthodontic specialists, audiologists and speech therapists.
Chief executive of Siloam Hospital Lippo Village, Anastina Tahjoo, said: "The presence of Siloam Cleft Center complements existing services at Siloam Hospitals Lippo Village, it is expected to provide the best service for patients with cleft lips and mouth cleft lip disorders."
Jeffrey Oeswadi, deputy chief executive at Siloam Hospital Lippo Village, welcomes the new Cleft Center, saying that "there’s no facility like this in Banten, especially not one with a multidisciplinary team like ours." He hopes that the Siloam Cleft Center can be a referral center for cleft lip cases in Jakarta and Banten.
The Jakarta Globe and Siloam Hospitals are both owned by the Lippo Group.
