Jakarta. Jakarta Police spokesman Chief Comr. Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono said the embezzlement case implicating Jakarta deputy governor candidate Sandiaga Uno is not related to the second round of the gubernatorial election, slated for April 19.
Sandiaga, the running mate of former education minister Anies Baswedan, was summoned to clarify questions that arose during an investigation involving an alleged misappropriation of funds in a Rp 7 billion ($527,000) land transaction in 2012.
"There is nothing [related to the gubernatorial election]. If there is a report, we will follow it up. The [preliminary] investigation has been ongoing for over two weeks," Argo said in Jakarta on Wednesday (22/03).
Argo also confirmed that Sandiaga did not comply with the Jakarta Police summons on Tuesday.
"We will interview the other [witnesses] and then we will decide whether we can proceed with the investigation. If we do decide to investigate further, we will summon [Sandiaga] again," Argo added.
Investigators have obtained evidence related to the case. However, Argo did not elaborate on the details.
The defendant, Andreas Tjahjadi, also filed a report for defamation against complainant Djoni Hidayat and his lawyer, Fransiska Kumalawati Susilo.
The police received the report on Monday this week.
"We will follow up the report. First, we will check if it warrants an investigation," Argo said.
Djoni, a businessman, reported Sandiaga and Andreas to the police on March 8.
Previously, Tanah Abang Police had questioned Sandiaga over similar allegations of defamation. At the time, he told reporters that the accusations were based on a mere misunderstanding.
Sandiaga and running mate Anies will face incumbent pair Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama and Djarot Saiful Hidayat in the second round of the Jakarta gubernatorial election next month.
