Hoaxers Arrested for Claiming Jokowi Will Ban Azan if He Wins Reelection

FEBRUARY 27, 2019

Jakarta. West Java police have charged three women with spreading a "black campaign video" against President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.

In the video that has gone viral on social media, the women said that if Jokowi wins reelection, the government will ban azan (Muslim call to prayer).

The women have been named as Enggay Sugiyanti, Ika Peranika and Citra Widaningsih. They were arrested in Karawang in West Java, just outside Jakarta, on Sunday night (25/02).

"It's official, they've been arrested," National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo told on Tuesday.

The video, reportedly shot in a housing complex in Karawang, showed the three women speaking loudly in Sundanese to an old lady who seemed to be trying to hide behind a door. "[If Jokowi wins] there will be no azan, there will be no women wearing veils. Women can marry women, men can marry men," one of the women said.

Enggay, Ika and Citra have been charged with violating Indonesia's Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law and may face up to ten years in jail if proven guilty.
