Indonesia Picks New House Speaker to Replace One on Trial for Graft
Jakarta. A senior politician from Indonesia’s second largest political party, Golkar, Bambang Soesatyo, was sworn in on Monday (15/01) as the new speaker of the country's House of Representatives to replace his party colleague Setya Novanto, who is now facing trial for graft.
Bambang was sworn in by the head of the country's Supreme Court on Monday afternoon at the House of Representatives building in South Jakarta.
"Bambang has a long experience in the House. He knows the ins and outs of it," Golkar chairman Airlangga Hartarto said when he announced Bambang's name as the new House speaker, as quoted by BeritaSatu.com.
Supreme Court chief justice Hatta Ali swore in Bambang in a brief ceremony led by deputy House speaker Agus Hermanto.
Bambang, a former journalist, joined Golkar in 2008. He first won a seat in the parliament in the 2009 election representing his constituent of Purbalingga, Banjarnegara and Kebumen in Central Java.
The 55-year old politician retained his seat in the 2014 legislative election. He was chairman of Commission III at the House, which oversees the country's legal affairs.
