Indonesian Shuttlers Dominate Men's Singles Competition in Iran
Jakarta. Indonesian shuttler Panji Ahmad Maulana won his first men's single title at the 26th Iran Fajr International Challenge in Tehran on Sunday (12/02) by defeating fellow countryman Vega Vio Nirwanda in four sets 11-4, 6-11, 11-6 and 11-8.
Panji and Vega are both in the Indonesian Badminton Federation's (PBSI) national camp for elite shuttlers.
"At the beginning, I was very nervous because we've been training together since we first started playing badminton," Panji said, as quoted by the PBSI's official website on Monday (13/02).
"Vega and I know each other's weaknesses but I tried to attack him from the very beginning [of the match]," the 19-year-old shuttler said.
Indonesia had a strong presence in the men's singles competition, with four semifinalists from the PBSI. Panji also defeated another Indonesian, Chico Aura Wardoyo, in the semifinals, while Vega stopped fellow countryman Krishna Adi Nugraha from advancing to the final.
Indonesia was represented by Kenas Adi Haryanto and Muhammad Reza Isfahani in the men's doubles competition, which saw them beaten to second place by Indian pair Arjun M.R. and Ramchandran Shlok in the final.
