Indonesia's Badminton Squad Stopped in Quarterfinals at 2017 World Junior Championship
Jakarta. Indonesia's young badminton squad was stopped in the quarterfinals on Thursday (12/10) in the mixed-team event category of the 2017 World Junior Championships at the Among Rogo Sporting Hall in Yogyakarta.
Indonesia lost hope to advance to the semifinals after being beaten 1-3 by China, with the only win presented by women's single shuttler Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, who beat Han Yue 21-17 and 21-17 in the second match.
The first match saw China lead with men's doubles pair Fan Qiuyue and Wang Chan, who defeated Adnan Maulana and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri by three sets 13-21, 21-18 and 21-15.
In the third match, China's men's single shuttler Yupeng Bai defeated the host's Gatjra Piliang Fiqihilahi Cupu, also by rubber sets 16-21, 21-15 and 21-13.
China assured place its place in the semifinals after women's doubles pair Liu Xuanxuan and Yuting Xia outclassed Indonesia's Jauza Fadhila Sugiarto and Ribka Sugiarto by 21-9 and 21-15 in the fourth match.
"China deserved the win," Susi Susanti, technical and development chief at the Indonesian Badminton Federation (PBSI), said after the loss, as quoted on the association's official website.
"My players showed that they were good only in first sets and stop intimidating opponents after then. They must have pressurized opponents all the time, but they opted to lose it," she added.
The championships, sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation, invites elite shuttlers aged under 19 from 60 countries. It still has an individual event that will begin on Oct. 16.
"Stamina, concentration, focus and bravery are some notes to be taken from this team event. Hopefully in individual event, they will do better," Susi said.
