Jokowi Departs for Japan to Attend G-20 Summit
Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo departed for Japan on Thursday evening to attend the Group of 20 leaders' conference in Osaka.
Jokowi said he would raise the issues of innovation in the digital economy and ways to overcome the economic gap during the summit scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
"I will also remind colleagues, whether prime ministers, presidents or kings, at the G-20 of the current situation in the world, marked by uncertainty due to the widening impact of the trade war [between the United States and China]," he said shortly before his departure from Halim Air Force Base in East Jakarta.
"I hope all G-20 countries and their leaders can show wisdom and collective leadership, so the situation can improve and provide certainty to all of us," he said.
The president was speaking shortly after the Constitutional Court upheld the result of the April 17 election, rejecting rival candidate Prabowo Subianto's claims of massive and systemic electoral fraud.
Responding journalists' questions on domestic security while he is abroad, Jokowi said: "God willing, there won't be any security problem as Vice President Jusuf Kalla is here."
The 19 members of the G-20 are China, Japan, Germany, France, India, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Britain, South Korea, Turkey, Italy, Russia, South Africa, Indonesia, Argentina, Australia and the United States, plus the European Union.
The main agenda of this year's summit is climate change.
