Mataram District Court Sentences French National to Death for Drug Trafficking
Jakarta. The Mataram District Court in West Nusa Tenggara sentenced a French citizen to death for drug trafficking on Monday.
Felix Dorfin, 35, was arrested at Zainuddin Abdul Madjid International Airport in Lombok in September last year while trying to smuggle 2.98 kilograms of narcotics, including extasy and amphetamine, into the country.
He was jailed in Mataram, the provincial capital, following his arrest, but managed to escape in January by bribing a police officer. He was recaptured two weeks later while hiding in a jungle in North Lombok.
The court found that his action warranted the death penalty.
"This kind of activity has the potential to damage our younger generations and disrupt national security," said Isnurul Syamsul Arif, the presiding judge, as quoted by Antara.
The public prosecutor, Ginung Pratidina, initially sought a 20-year prison term and a Rp 10 billion ($690,000) fine for Dorfin.
Dorfin, after hearing the verdict, said through a translator that he would appeal his sentence.
Indonesia has some of the world's strictest drug laws, while traffickers sentenced to death are usually executed by firing squad.
According to Amnesty International, there were 262 people on death row in Indonesia at the end of 2017. The country last carried out executions in 2016.
