Jakarta. Social media platform Twitter has been flooded with responses and commentary after Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama was named a blasphemy suspect on Wednesday (16/11).
The hastags #KamiAhok, or We Are Ahok, and #PenjarakanAhok, or Jail Ahok, topped the trending topics for Indonesia.
Netizens responded en masse to the police's decision to name Basuki a blasphemy suspect on Wednesday morning.
He was named suspect in a blasphemy case following a speech to residents of Pramuka Island in Kepulauan Seribu two months ago. In video footage of the campaign event, he said no one should manipulate verses from the Koran for political gain.
As of Wednesday at 1 p.m., the Twitter hashtag #KamiAhok topped Indonesia's trending topic in a show of support to the incumbent. It also stood fifth in worldwide's trending.
“Ahok @basuki_btp is a good man. If we are this ignorant may be we don’t deserve progress. May be we don’t deserve him #ImwithAhok #KamiAhok,” filmmaker Joko Anwar posted on his Twitter account.
On the other hand, some netizens called on police to arrest Basuki as soon as possible after the suspect naming process.
“The suspect naming and the legal process is postponed, what it stands for? There are no legal certainties. The demands of Muslim groups is clear, #JailAhok,” said Prijanto Rabbani who is also the director of Center for Strategic and Policy Studies.
Kalau hanya tersangka dan prosesnya diundur, buat apa? Tak ada kepastian hukum.
