North Jakarta LRT to Start Operations by End of May
Jakarta. There is good news for anyone living in and around Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta.
The first phase of the Jakarta Light Rail Transit system will start commercial operations by the end of May.
"By the end of this month, we hope that all stations, depots and bridges will be integrated with TransJakarta bus stops so that they are feasible for commercial operations," Jakarta LRT project director Iwan Takwin said on Wednesday.
He said while the track, stations and trains have been ready for operation, the operator is still waiting for the completion of an additional facility that will integrate the track with the existing busway network.
"The construction of the skybridge to the Pemuda Rawamangun bus stop will be completed by the end of May; we are just waiting for the steel to be installed," he said.
"We are perfecting the ticket integration system at Jakarta LRT [stations] and TransJakarta bus stops. We are currently discussing the ticket integration scheme," Iwan said.
The six stations in the first phase of the Jakarta LRT are Pegangsaan Dua (main depot in Kelapa Gading), North Boulevard, South Boulevard, Pulomas, Equestrian and Velodrome in East Jakarta. The track runs 5.8 kilometers from north to east. A single train consists of two cars, which can carry up to 270 passengers. Trains will arrive every five minutes during peak hours and every 15 minutes at other times.
Jakarta LRT has set a flat-rate fare of Rp 5,000 (35 US cents). Operating hours are from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends.
