Jakarta. The narcotics unit of the National Police arrested six Malaysian nationals who used a rented yacht to smuggle 37 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine to Indonesia, an official said on Tuesday.

Indonesian police are cooperating with their Malaysian counterparts to investigate the drug smuggling network. Law enforcement agencies in both countries are currently searching for two fugitives, according to Chief Comr. Krisno Halomoan Siregar, head of the police's narcotics unit.

Four suspects, including the captain, were arrested in North Jakarta on June 4 on board the yacht, which they rented in Malaysia for 2.5 million ringgit ($601,000). They had set off for Jakarta from Johor in southern Malaysia, Krisno said.

Two more suspects were arrested on shore at the Batavia Marina yacht anchorage at Sunda Kelapa Port in North Jakarta while waiting for the yacht's arrival. Krisno said the two had arrived in Indonesia earlier to observe the situation.

He added that the crystal methamphetamine, locally known as sabu, was hidden inside 37 fenders on the yacht. The arrested suspects, whom police only identified by the initials M.I.F., I.K.Z., S.H.N., S.L.H., R.H.M. and M.H.Z., all face the death penalty as Indonesia still imposes capital punishment for the smuggling of such quantities of drugs.

"Usually, smugglers use fishing boats. So the use of a yacht is rare and this is the first case we have found so far," Krisno said during a press conference at the port where the suspects and the drug haul were shown to journalists.
