Soekarno-Hatta Airport Launches First Electric Taxi Service in Asia
Jakarta. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, has launched its new electric taxi service, the first country in Asia to do so.
The metered electric taxis are operated by Blue Bird, the country's largest taxi company, state-run airport operator Angkasa Pura II said in a statement on Sunday.
"The electric taxis are part of our strategy to turn Soekarno-Hatta into an eco-airport," Angkasa Pura II president director Muhammad Awaluddin said in the statement.
A special area in Terminal 3 is now being used as a charging station for the Blue Bird electric taxis.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo in August signed off on a presidential regulation to accelerate electric car development in Indonesia.
"This is the first zero-emission airport [electric taxi] service in Asia," Blue Bird president director Noni S. Purnomo said in a statement.
Blue Bird currently employs a fleet of 29 Tesla and BYD electric cars for the airport service.
Other all-electric transportation available at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport includes the Skytrain, electric buses and electric scooters.
