Trump Congratulates Jokowi for 'Free, Fair and Peaceful' Elections

MAY 22, 2019

Jakarta. The United States president Donald Trump has congratulated President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo for the success of last month's simultaneous elections. Trump also said he looks forward to bolstering ties between the two countries.

"Congratulations to you and the people of Indonesia for holding free, fair, and peaceful elections, and, for the first time, administering concurrent presidential and legislative polls," Trump wrote in a letter from the White House, dated May 21.

Jokowi has secured a second term at the helm of Southeast Asia's largest economy after winning the presidential election with 55.5 percent of the vote, the General Elections Commission (KPU) announced on Tuesday.

Trump also praised Indonesia's democracy, saying that it has made great progress over the past 20 years.

"Indonesia's democratic transformation over the past 20 years has been remarkable, and I understand that the voter turnout this year was among the highest ever at more than 80 percent. Indonesia is setting an example for nations around the world," the US president said.

The former property tycoon said he is proud of the strategic partnership between the US and Indonesia as two of the world's leading democracies.

"We share common views about the region and the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting fundamental freedoms. The United States welcomes Indonesia's leadership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the United Nations Security Council and other organizations."

Trump said he looks forward to working together with Jokowi and bolster alliance between the two countries.

"I am committed to strengthening our ties to achieve the enormous potential in the relationship between our two democracies," Trump said.
