Jakarta. Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya met with Sharapov Anvar Kurbanovich, chairman of the Uzbek Tourism Development Committee, to discuss a potential tourism deal between Indonesia and Uzbekistan on Tuesday (02/05).
Kurbanovich is on an international tour visiting countries in Southeast Asia. His delegation comprised of officials and representatives of Uzbekistan’s tourism industry.
Uzbekistan is planning to provide visa-free travel for Indonesians in the near future, and is planning to launch a direct flight from its capital city of Tashkent to Bali.
According to Arief, Uzbekistan should not hesitate to implement this policy because of its potential to increase international tourists to the country.
"Visa-free access is an effective policy to increase international tourists. Indonesia experienced a double-digit increase in tourism through this same policy," Arief said.
During the meeting, Uzbekistan also launched a package for travelers who embark on umrah – a pilgrimage to Mecca outside the hajj season – which will also include a trip to Uzbekistan, a country with rich Islamic history.
Arief said that he will spearhead the deal by urging travel agencies in Indonesia to promote umrah packages with trips to Uzbekistan. To do so, he said will start facilitating meetings between relevant representatives from the two countries.
