Want to Try a Ride-Hailing App for Angkot? Go to Bekasi

Bekasi. The West Java city of Bekasi on the eastern outskirts of Jakarta had a historic day on Friday when Mayor Rahmat Effendi inaugurated its first ride-hailing platform for angkot, or public minivans.

"This is a noteworthy history that hailing an angkot can now be done via an online application," the enthusiastic mayor said during the inauguration ceremony at the city's Patriot Candrabhaga multifunction sports stadium.

The platform, known as Tron, was developed by Teknologi Rancang Olah Nusantara, a joint venture between the city and the private sector. It currently connects 30 angkot services to its system, enabling users to book rides online.

The 30 angkots operate on two routes, one from the city's main bus terminal, known as Terminal Induk, to Rawalumbu (a subdistrict in East Bekasi), Jalan Narogong and the Bantargebang landfill area. This route is served by angkots with the code K 11A.

The second route runs from Terminal Induk to Perumnas 3, a large housing estate in East Bekasi. Angkots with the code K 11B service this route.

The proud mayor said Tron is the only ride-hailing application for angkot in Indonesia.

"This is part of our service to the public that we built this app, to provide a breakthrough for Bekasi city," he said.

However, Tron will face stiff competition from the two popular ride-hailing services that currently dominate the market, Go-Jek and Grab, which offer both motorcycle and car transportation through their own own apps.

Millions of people in Jakarta and surrounding cities commute for business and work each day.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, 47.5 million trips were undertaken per day by people in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi in 2015. Of these, 40 percent were in Jakarta. The ministry has yet to release new data, but the figure is widely believed to have grown significantly since then.

How Does It Work?

David Santoso, chief executive of Teknologi Rancang Olah Nusantara, said the Tron application has been available since early last month. 

"We have been operating since April 10 and we continue to disseminate information and educate the people of Bekasi, especially users of routes K 11A and K 11 B and angkot owners," he said. 

David said the Tron app allows commuters to hail angkots and they are then directed to the nearest virtual bus stop from their location. He said they have identified 400 pickup points in Bekasi, but that there are only 40 pickup points on the two routes.

After downloading the app from Google Play for Android-based smartphones and App Store for iPhones, users must provide their full names, email addresses and phone numbers.

David said 2,000 Android users have so far downloaded the app, but that the target is 10,000 in the short term, as the operator plans to add more routes. He added that the tariff will increase to Rp 5,000 (35 US cents) per trip.

Like other ride-hailing apps, Tron users book their routes and are charged per trip. However, what is different is the fare, which is fixed at Rp 3,000 per trip – very similar to the cost of a trip on a regular angkot.

David unveiled an ambitious target of connecting 10,000 angkots to the app by the first quarter of 2020.
