Grab Tests New Food-Delivery Service
Jakarta. Ride-hailing app Grab trialled GrabFood, its new on-demand food-delivery service, on Monday (02/05), a company spokesman said.
Ekhel Chandra Wijaya of Grab Indonesia told the Jakarta Globe in an e-mail that the service is available to customers between 11.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. for the deliveries of food from restaurants in the Sudirman Central Business District, Semanggi, Kuningan and Senayan areas in South Jakarta.
"Jakartans are foodies at heart, but being stuck in traffic or having to make reservations way ahead of time are getting in the way of enjoying good food," Grab vice president Cheryl Goh said. "We're beta testing GrabFood to solve this problem and make it easier for people to get the food they want."
So far, there are no details on when the on-demand food-delivery service will be available full-time on Grab.
During the beta trial, customers were able to order food from several restaurants in the designated area, including Bottega, PEPeNERO, Cut the Crab and Turkuaz.
GrabFood drivers will carry thermal bags to make sure the food they deliver does not spoil while en route.
Grab's local competitor, Go-Jek, already offers a food-delivery service, called Go-Food. This service is available 24 hours per day, although it relies on the availability of its partner restaurants and drivers.
Go-Jek and GrabFood will also have to compete with foodpanda — an online service that allows customers to place orders for delivery — for a slice of the lucrative food-delivery market.
