Antigraft Body Warns Against Gratification in Wedding of President's Daughter
Jakarta. Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) warned on Tuesday (07/11) against gratification attempts during the much-publicized wedding of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's daughter Kahiyang Ayu, scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
The wedding at Graha Saba Buana reception center in Solo, Central Java — the president's hometown — is expected to draw around 8,000 guests, everyone from state officials to prominent businessmen.
The KPK is concerned that lavish gifts for the bride and groom might constitute gratification given Jokowi's status as president.
"Please just give Bobby [Nasution, the groom] and Kahiyang flowers so the president won't be busy reporting to the KPK after the festivity," KPK deputy chairman Saut Situmorang said as quoted by Suara Pembaruan.
He said the first family should report all gifts received during the wedding to the KPK.
"The gratification directorate will later decide whether they will be kept by the state. Everything will be assessed, including the price of the gifts," Saut said in Jakarta.
Saut nevertheless said it would be better for the first family to reject gifts of all kind since receiving them can create a state of "dependence" that in turn could lead to corruption.
