John Mayer Serves Up Wonderland in First Indonesian Concert
Jakarta. A boisterous 10,000-strong crowd welcomed American singer-songwriter John Mayer to the Indonesia Convention Exhibition center at BSD City in Tangerang for his first ever Indonesian concert last Friday (05/04).
Titled "An Evening With John Mayer," the concert opened with the pop crooner's 2006 hit "Belief," which originally featured Ben Harper on guitar. The fans, who have been waiting for years for Mayer to come to Indonesia, immediately started singing along to the lyrics and they practically never let up until he left the stage.
The 41-year-old played a long set list of 25 songs, including both old hits like "XO," "Your Body Is a Wonderland," "Something Like Olivia" and singles from his new album, "New Light" and "Guess I Just Feel Like."
He also showed off amazing guitar skills in a brief solo which made the already adoring audience swoon even more with delight.
A loud chant of "We want more!" echoed in the cavernous ICE concert hall when Mayer left the stage. As expected, he came back soon after for an encore that included heartfelt renditions of the piano-laden ballad "You're Gonna Live Forever in Me" and the bluesy "Gravity."
After the concert, the Connecticut-born artist posted snaps from the show on his Instagram page, accompanied by this caption: "This is a story about Instagram helping build a bridge between an artist and fans he wouldn’t have otherwise known he had, if not for them reaching out to him via social media. Thank you Jakarta for a beautiful night!"
One fan in the crowd, speaking to the Jakarta Globe, said "[The concert] was spectacular. I’m glad he sang so many songs, I'm more than satisfied."
Another fan said, "His guitar skill was amazing and he sang with his heart. I was very moved."
John Mayer is a seven-time Grammy-winning singer and songwriter. At one time in a long career that began in 1996, he had a number one in the Billboard Top Rock Album for seven consecutive years.
His latest album, The Search for Everything, was released in 2017.
The Tangerang concert was part of Mayer's World Tour 2019 which also comes through several other Asian countries. He came to Jakarta after a stopover in Bangkok. China and Japan will be the next countries on the tour.
