Jakarta. This Ramadan, families can enjoy the newest adventures of Malaysia's most famous twins in "Upin & Ipin: Keris Siamang Tunggal" or "Upin & Ipin: The Lone Gibbon Kris" which was released in theaters on Thursday.
Upin & Ipin: Keris Siamang Tunggal is the fourth feature film based on the animated tv series "Upin & Ipin" created by Les' Copaque Production after "Geng: The Adventure Begins," "Laksamana Upin & Ipin" ("Admiral Upin & Ipin"), and "Upin & Ipin: Jeng Jeng Jeng!"
The movie was created with a budget of RM20 million, making it the most expensive Malaysian film ever made.
During Ramadan, waiting for sundown to break the fast can test anyone's patience, especially children. Upin & Ipin’s latest antics might make for an enjoyable time while waiting, and learn a valuable lesson along the way.
"If you want to take kids out to 'ngabuburit' [do activities until sunset], this film is perfect. Of course for children and parents, behind every Upin & Ipin story is a lesson we can all learn from," Titan Hermawan, managing director of MNC Pictures said in a press statement.
For a lot of Indonesians, Upin & Ipin is a window that glimpses into the Malay culture and language. Since it aired in Indonesia, the animated twins have won the hearts of many Indonesian families and children.
Titan said that the animation quality of Upin & Ipin is on par with what Hollywood has to offer. The film took almost 5 years to make by the animators at Les' Copaque, who have poured their heart and hard work into the movie.
"This is a good start for MNC Pictures and Les' Copaque to move forward to utilize existing resources, both in Malaysia and in Indonesia. Of course the film will tell a different story than what we've seen on tv, this will be an exciting new adventure for Upin and Ipin," Titan said.
In the new movie, titular twins Upin and Ipin, along with their multicultural gang: Ehsan Fizi, Mail, Jarjit, Mei Mei, and Susanti stumble across a mystical kris, a traditional Malay and Indonesian dagger.
The magical kris opens a portal that transports the group of friends to the Kingdom of Inderaloka. As they try to find their way back home, they meet several characters from Malay folklore. Together they have to help restore the kingdom and fight back the evil king, Raja Bersiong who intends to destroy the kingdom.
