Singer Kunto Aji's Debut Album a Nod to Millennials
Jakarta. In his 2014 ballad, "Terlalu Lama Sendiri, or "Alone for Too Long," Indonesian singer Kunto Aji laments about being single.
"It feels like it's been a long time since someone was by my side," the curly-haired singer croons with his undulating, soulful vocal.
Trials and tribulations in love are only some of the themes present in his debut album, "Generation Y," which was launched on Tuesday.
As the album's name suggests, Kunto aims to explore the lives of Generation Y — popularly known as the millennials — that he himself is a part of. Through this album, he wants to underline the message that his generation is independent, creative and tech-savvy.
For the record's nine tracks, including the aforementioned single, the 28-year-old musician wrote lyrics predominantly inspired by events in his own life, such as a quarter-life crisis.
He also composed all of the musical arrangements, which took him two years to finish.
Kunto collaborated with artist Farid Stevy to create the album artwork. The minimalist, all-white cover features a sticker shaped like two hands holding a smartphone.
His fans will also find additional stickers inserted in the CD packaging so they can create their own customized designs — something that is intended to be a "form of interaction [with listeners]," Kunto said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Kunto said he was hopeful to perform in his own concert soon.
"I've never held any concert before, so I'm really looking forward to one," he said.
Born in Yogyakarta, Kunto first entered Indonesia's musical limelight after competing in the fifth season of "Indonesian Idol" in 2008, which he finished at fourth place.
