Mass Cycling Event 'Gowes Pesona Nusantara' Hits Lumajang
Jakarta. The Ministry of Sports grassroots cycling program, called Gowes Pesona Nusantara, or GPN, was initiated on Sunday (27/08) in Lumajang, East Java, with thousands of participants hitting the 20-kilometer track.
"The GPN aims to increase public health through cycling. We expect this event will stimulate sports participation in Lumajang," said Edi Nurinda Susila, the head of the Sports Ministry's Center for Science, Technology and Health (PP-Itkon).
Attendees of the event included Lumajang's deputy district head, Buntaran Supriyanto, who specially thanked the ministry for facilitating the fun cycling event.
"I hope Lumajang citizens will have stronger bonds after this," Buntaran said, adding that there were 24 local cycling clubs present at Sunday's event.
"The distance was quite far but I'm happy as it is our hobby," said Rudi, a member of Indonesia's Classic Bicycle Club, or Kosti.
The event was also complemented by other entertainment packages, such as a door prize and live music.
The Sports Ministry stated in April that the GPN expected to attract 75 million participants in 2017.
