Whitehouse Finishes in Top Place in Stage 5 of Tour de Flores 2017
Jakarta. Daniel Whitehouse of the CCN Cycling Team finished in top place in stage 5 of Tour de Flores 2017, completing the 55.5-kilometer ascent from the coastal town of Borong to Ruteng at 1,200 meters above sea level, in 1 hour 42 minutes and 57 seconds.
However, despite being the reigning champion and a local favorite, Whitehouse performed at a mediocre level in the first two stages of the tour, finishing as runner up in stages 3 and 4.
Whitehouse remained in the pelotonin the first 20 kilometers of the race, while a group of seven riders broke away with a 30-second gap ahead of the peloton.
The 22-year-old British cyclist attacked in the first king of the mountains and worked together with Indonesian teammate Hari Fitrianto, who helped him place second in the subsequent climb, behind the polka dot jersey holder, Edgar Nohales Nieto of the 7-Eleven Cycling Team.
In the third king of the mountains, Whitehouse lunged forward alone leaving rivals in a speedy descent to Ruteng.
With this result, Whitehouse moved up to 10th place overall, more than 13 minutes behind yellow jersey holder Thomas Lebas of the Kinan Cycling Team who finished seventh.
Indonesian champion Muhammad Imam Arifin remains in third place overall — and is still the best Indonesian, Southeast Asian and Asian rider — behind Iranian Arvin Moazzami Godarzi of the Pishgaman Cycling Team.
The last stage of Tour de Flores 2017 will feature a 120-kilometer descent to Labuan Bajo.
