Astra Car Sales Down Almost 20% So Far This Year
Jakarta. Car sales by Astra International, a diversified conglomerate in Indonesia, dropped 19.44 percent in the first five months of this year because of a slowdown in consumer demand, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.
Astra, Indonesia's biggest vehicle distributor, said in the statement that car sales declined to 223,016 units in the January to May period, compared to 276,839 units in the same period last year.
The decline caused Astra's market share to fall to 50 percent, from 52 percent previously.
The company explained that the decline affected all four of the car brands it sells in Indonesia: Toyota, Daihatsu, Isuzu and Peugeot, but Toyota and Isuzu were hit hardest.
Astra said Toyota sales dropped 24.59 percent in the first five months of this year, to 139,173 units. Daihatsu sales declined to 74,658 units, which is 5.97 percent lower than last year's sales in the same period. Isuzu sales posted a 25.69-percent drop to 9,162 units and Peugeot sales dropped 11.53 percent, to 23 units.
Moreover, UD Trucks, which are sold by Astra's unit Astra Multi Trucks Indonesia, failed to post any sales in the first five months of 2015, compared to 520 units sold in the same period last year.
The decline in sales of the car brands Astra is offering was bigger than the overall decline in Indonesia's automotive market.
According to the Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers Association (Gakindo), national car sales in the January to May period dropped 16.61 percent to 443,328 units, from 531,805 units in the same period last year, as Indonesia is reeling from a slowdown in global commodity prices.
In the low-cost green car (LCGC) segment, Astra's car sales plunged no less than 25.32 percent, to 38,237 units.
Astra also posted a 17.76-percent decline in its motorcycle sales in the first five months of this year, to 1,769,295 units.
