Indonesia, Morocco Agree to Step Up Cooperation in Economy
Jakarta. Indonesia and Morocco are going to boost economic cooperation through a preferential trade agreement and by facilitating more interaction in the private sector.
In January, Indonesia presented a draft for the trade agreement, which will soon be addressed by the Moroccan government, deputy Foreign Minister A.M. Fachir said after a meeting with his counterpart, Mounia Boucetta, in Jakarta on Tuesday (13/02).
According to Fachir, the agreement will help improve performance of both countries' private sectors and will boost bilateral trade, has been on the decline in the past few years.
"We need products from Morocco, such as phosphate, which will help us meet [domestic] demand for fertilizers," Fachir told reporters.
Phosphates are one of Morocco's main industries. The country processes more than 70 percent of the world's phosphate reserves.
During the meeting, Fachir and Boucetta also discussed efforts in promoting interfaith dialogue.
"We have similar programs, which we can use as a base for cooperation, and which we can also share with other countries," Fachir said.
Morocco also declared support for Indonesia's candidacy to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
Boucetta said the meeting confirmed good relations between the countries and expressed hope that the cooperation between them will expand to the fields of politics and social issues.
