Jakarta. Indonesia's consumers turned more upbeat in April, with economic conditions seen improving over the coming months, a central bank survey showed on Tuesday (09/05).

Bank Indonesia's consumer index was 123.7 in April, the highest since June 2000, according to Thomson Reuters data. The results also far exceeded the 121.5 reading in March.

A reading above 100 in the survey indicates consumers are optimistic. About 4,600 respondents from 18 major cities participated in the survey.

The survey found that consumers expected better economic conditions over the next six months, driven mainly by an increase in business activity and income.

Consumers involved in the survey predicted that price pressures would still be high in the next three months because prices had not returned to normal after the Idul Fitri festivity and new school admission year.

Indonesia's April annual inflation rate rose to 4.17 percent, the quickest pace since March 2016, from 3.61 percent in March.
